Some of the world's finest musicians playing on tunes written by HR. The DVD The HR Project (HR's Story) is a wonderful production documenting the life of an extraordinary musician.   51. I recently discovered Neil Merryweather's website . This has an interview with Neil by Ruth McCartney where he discusses, among many things, HR's playing on his album Word of Mouth. It is number 7 in the video clips. (December 6, 2010)
  52. I recently purchased another Epiphone Howard Roberts Custom made in 1967 (see Equipment for pictures). This guitar was previously owned by jazz guitarist Edward (Eudimio) Marocco of New Haven, Michigan and was sold to me by his guitarist son James 'Rocco' Marocco. This guitar was a special order and has some unique features especially with respect to the finish as several extra coats were added. The guitar is in beautiful condition and plays and sounds great.   65. Howard Roberts' first album Mr. Roberts Plays Guitar has been released on CD by Fresh Sound FSR-CD 478. This includes 5 bonus tracks that were previously released on an album called Collections. Collections featured various people recording with Joe Morello and contains some outstanding playing by H.R. (February 25, 2008).

  150. I received the new issue of Color Him Funky/H.R. Is A Dirty Guitar Player on Euphoria. This has been remastered by Bob Irwin and Jayme Pieruzzi of Sundazed Studios. The sound is fantastic - much better than previous reissues. There are also some new, informative liner notes by Jim Carlton (original covers and notes also reproduced). Again a wonderful package from these folks. Well worth owning! (August 19).

    "I went to Berklee School of Music in the late 60's and my teacher Bill Leavitt, head of the guitar program at Berklee, spoke of Howard with great reverence. Howard had visited Berklee the year before I arrived and Bill said that he was not only predictably brilliant musically but very generous with his time, knowledge and humor."

  159. I've learned that Ivor Mairant's book The Jazz Guitarists is going to be reprinted later this year and come out in two volumes at a modest price. This will be published by Sanctuary Publishing. I believe this has material on H.R. in it and in particular a transcription of Polka Dots and Moonbeams from Mr. Roberts Plays Guitar. This book was published some years ago but was priced very high ($300). Ivor Mairants was a famous British guitarist, owner of a well-known music store in London and writer of a number of good books on guitar playing.   270. I recently saw the movie Space Cowboys by Clint Eastwood. When the film opens there is a beautiful solo acoustic guitar piece on the soundtrack. This is played by Mitch Holder on the Gibson H.R. pictured immediately above (for more details on this guitar look under Equipment). The guitar has a fabulous tone and the piece, called Espacio and written by Clint Eastwood, is beautifully played by Mitch. (August 17)

  272. The recently released Clint Eastwood movie Space Cowboys features the Gibson H.R. Prototype guitar pictured immediately above (see Equipment for more details on this guitar). The movie opens with a solo acoustic guitar being played by Mitch Holder, the current owner of this guitar. Interestingly Mitch tells me that he was misinformed about the requirements of the session or he would have taken an acoustic guitar.
